Dental Implant Procedure : Teeth Implants

A dental implant is a prosthetic replacement for a missing tooth. Natural teeth consist of the crown and the root. The crown is the visible section that is covered with white enamel. Supporting the crown is the tooth root which extends into the jawbone. The root is the part of the tooth that is effectively replaced by an implant. Implant has three parts  - the implant device itself (which is inserted directly into the bone); the abutment - the piece that connects the implant device to the third part - the overlying crown or denture.

Dental Implant Procedure

Surgical placement of the implant into the bone. This is usually done right in the dentist’s office, with a local anesthetic. After surgery, there is a healing period of approximately four months. During this time, the implants fuse to the bone by a process known as ‘osseointegration’.

Next, there is a minor surgical exposure of the top of the implant, whereby the dentist will attach the post to the implant.  The function of the post is to become the support for either one tooth or a set of teeth. This is a short procedure that usually requires only local anesthesia.

The last phase is the restorative phase.  The dentist will take impressions and then make a prosthesis that will attach to the implants.  This will require several visits.  Once completed, your mouth will be restored to natural looking, strong teeth.

Dental implants are made of a variety of materials, such as titanium, aluminium oxide and surgical stainless steel. The devices are firmly attached to the jaw bone through surgery and implant posts provide a comfortable, stable support on which artificial teeth can be secured.

There are two types of implants:
1) An endosteal implant is placed directly into the bone, like natural tooth roots and can be used for many purposes. A single pin can be inserted through an existing tooth to strengthen and stabilize it. Other styles can provide an anchor for one or more artificial teeth.
2) A subperiosteal  implant consist of a metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Posts, which are attached to the frame, protrude through the gums. As with Endothelial implants, artificial teeth are then mounted to the posts.
